The ancient Greeks were fully aware of the virtues of the use of herbs and rubbed mint on the dining table in order to release its wonderful smell as a form of aromatherapy. It has been used to flavor bathing water and in the 6th century it was first used for teeth cleaning cream. Mint is still widely used as herb to treat indigestion, insomnia, gastritis and is especial useful for coughing, colds and sore throats.
Marjoram tea is particularly digestive and helps to remove toxins from the body. It relaxes and helps in eliminating stress relieving us from insomnia and frequent migraines. It is gentle and palatable and tastes somewhat like chamomile. The color of the infusion is light yellow.
The leaves have a gentle lemon scent, related to mint. At the end of the summer, little white flowers full of nectar appear. These attract bees, hence the genus name Melissa (Greek for 'honey bee'). Its flavour comes from the terpenes citronellal, citronellol, citral, and geraniol. Lemon Balm is also used medicinally as an herbal tea. It is claimed to have antibacterial, antiviral properties, and it is also used as a mild sedative or calming agent.
During Roman times, flowers were sold for 100 denarii per pound, which was about the same as a month's wages for a farm labourer, or fifty haircuts from the local barber. Lavender has been use against stomach aches, colds and sore throats. Its is used as a calming herb to help in promoting sleep and reduce stress as it relaxes the nervous system. This lavender is a very high quality blue in color from France know to have some the best lavender.
